I'm not even going to try to explain Neil Stephenson's book "Seveneves". Suffice to say you don't expect to turn the page and see a chapter titled Five Thousand Years Later. No spoilers here other than the chapter name and that it's 861 gripping pages.
If you've never read any of his books, they are deep in detail; technical and descriptive. He lays the foundation so the science fiction parts are utterly believable. His social analysis is weaved so well that the characters are people who you want to meet, or hope to never cross their paths.
When my friends ask, I always tell them to start with "Snow Crash". If you don't lose yourself in the first page, or get to the end of the first chapter without wanting more, his writing is not for you.
